           HELP FIGHT LOCAL TAX INCREASES

And support our recently elected GOP supervisors. The forces are gathering to push our taxes up by as much as 13% in Albemarle County. In these times of economic difficulty, when we are all sacrificing, our government should not make things more difficult for us. You need to come to Lane Auditorium at 6:00 Wednesday March 3rd to let the Supervisors know that you cannot afford a tax increase at this time.

February 2010

  Mark Your Calendars

Our next gathering will be our ACRWL New Member Coffee on Thursday, February 18th from 10:00 to 11:30 at the Forest Lake Club house. at which time we have welcome new members and inaugurate our 2010 officers.

Please plan to attend and, if possible, bring a new member with you.  We have a very exciting and important election year ahead of us and we need to get even more Republican women involved so we can continue "making a difference".

December 2009

It's a Primary!

On Saturday, Dec. 12th, the 5th District Central Committee voted to have our nominee for 5th District Congressman decided by a Primary rather than a Convention -  despite the obvious choice of a convention expressed by those attending the Albemarle County Republican  Committee's breakfast that same day.

A Republican primary, which means that the voting is open to any voter registered in the district and not limited to Republicans, will be held on June 8th and will required that the 7 candidates now seeking the nomination campaign heavily against each other between now and then.  This is regrettable, to say the least - but it is a decision we have to accept.

The biggest concern among those whose only interest is defeating Periello is the very real concern that a primary will make it harder to unify the party afterwards.  Hard fought primaries cost a lot of money and unfortunately emotions can run very high.

As individuals, each of us is entitled to support the candidate of our choice in any way we wish but it is important we consider the possible division that can occur and keep our rhetoric civil and respectful at all times.

To achieve victory in November,  it is crucial we all get solidly behind whomever is nominated through the primary process.

November 2009

PALIN PACKS IN A CROWD AT FT BRAGG PX
Headline in the Fayetteville, N.C. newspaper 11/24/09

And this time, the local media had it right!!  We know this because your ACRWL webmaster was there and saw it all from start to finish.

Over 4,000 men, women, children, (who took the day off from school) grandparents -military and civilian alike -  truly a cross section of Americana-  were cheerfully enduring the chilly rainy weather to catch a glimpse of Sarah.  Most of them clutched, with obvious pleasure, one or more copies of her new book and according to the article in the paper, the line for those wishing to get her to sign their books stretch all around the large building with some standing in line for as long as 23 hours (!!!).

Outside the Post Exchange building, there was media everything - video taping or hand recording interviews, while ordinary people were taking pictures of each other in front of the huge tour bus that displayed an enormous picture of Sarah in front of majestic snow capped mountains.

Inside the excitement was even more palatable as folks entering found themselves part of a tightly packed crowd in a semi circle rimming a roped off area where Sarah, her father and her daughter, Piper, were seated  Those with height advantage held their cell phones high over their heads to capture a photo of Sarah while the less advantage in that department, men and women alike, climbed up on chairs (or others' shoulders) to accomplish the same thing.

I watched all of this from a nearby table in the PX snack bar and marveled at how extremely orderly and polite everyone was.  There was an air of great excitement, yes - everyone seemed thrilled to have seen her - but despite the constant ebb and flow of the huge crowd, the general mood was relatively quiet and certainly respectful.  Quite unusual, I thought, for such a large gathering in such a small space.

As I nibbled on my hot dog, a familiar face came passed me and sat just two tables away.  It took me a moment to realize it was Greta Van Susteren from Fox TV!  It wasn't long before folks started easing over and getting that obligatory picture to prove they had seen her.  Since I forgot my camera, you'll just have to believe me when I say she looked just like herself.

So, no, I didn't get any pictures or my book signed  - nor did I get more than a couple of good glimpses of Sarah  - but I was there and it was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget - if for no other reason than the media actually reported it as it was - even if only in the local paper!!!

CALL TO ACTION!!

Please call Perriello's office today (Thursday, June 25th) and state your opposition to the "energy Tax bill" (i.e. "cap and trade") coming before the House on Friday of this week.

The number to call is 202-225-4711

Pelosi put this bill on the agenda on Tuesday of this week in a deliberate and shameless attempt to push it through without allowing enough time for our representatives to know what is in the bill or for the public to express their approval or opposition.

This is not right!   Urge Perriello NOT TO VOTE FOR THIS BILL!

BUMPER STICKER OF THE DAY
(Thanks to Sally Zellem)

If you think Healthcare is expensive now,
wait until it is FREE!

URGENT CALL TO ACTION!

Things are moving so fast on Capital Hill we could have a national healthcare system before we know it!   So, NOW is the time to let our voices be heard.

Please call Representative Perriello (202-225-4711) Senator Webb (202-224-4024) and Senator Warner (202-224-2023) to let them know you are opposed to any bill that would establish a national healthcare system and emphatically urge them to vote against any such bill.

(OR if you prefer, you can email them as follows:
www.Perriello.house.gov   then go to contact tab
www.Webb.senate.gov  -   then go to contact tab
www.Warner.senate.gov
- then go to contact tab

That is really all you have to say in order to have your voice heard and counted...but if you'd like to be more articulate, our Legislative Chairman, Audrey Welborn, suggests you check out the following web sites for important facts and great background information.

December, 2008

The following was inserted in a Christmas card mailed to the White House on December 8, 2008.

 Dear President and Mrs. Bush,

We write to wish you a “Merry Christmas” and to tell you how much we appreciate the incomparable service you have rendered our nation for eight long and extremely difficult years.

We thank you for your steadfast dedication to keeping us safe; for your reassuring demeanor that helped calm our fears;  for your constant grace under relentless pressures that revealed to us your inner strengths, and for your manifest compassion that touched our hearts and made us proud to be  Americans.  You will always have our profound admiration and gratitude.  May the coming years bring you comfort and joy and may God continue to bless you both.

November 2008

"Republican Women: More important than ever"

This was the subject addressed by our special guests speakers, Dana White of the McCain-Palin campaign and Karen Agness, Founder of the Network of Enlightened Women, at our November luncheon meeting which was held at the Blue Ridge Cafe on Friday, November 21st. with over sixty ladies in attendance. With the disappointing results of the 2008 election fresh in everyone's mind, Dana and Karen gave us a new perspective of where we are as a political party and what we need to do better in the future. Their talk was not only interesting and enlightening, but it was also very encouraging for all of us to hear the positive outlook of these two young ladies who are indeed the future of our Republican Party.

October 2008

 We Did It!!

Over 15,000 hand addressed envelopes were sent out to voters in 11 different Albemarle County precincts containing letters signed by 60 different people each encouraging their neighbors to support Virgil Goode for Congress.  This was a massive undertaking and all ACRWL ladies can be duly proud of their participation, regardless of the outcome of the election.  Thank you, ladies. You made us all proud.

 White House Christmas Ornaments

This year's ornament is even more beautiful than the previous one! It is in the shape of a Christmas tree and will make a wonderful gift.  But the price is still only $20!!  If you haven't already done so, place your order now with Mary Land or Cindi  Burket.  The boxed ornaments will be available for you to pick up at our November meeting.

September 2008

Whimsical Elephants all 'round town

Have you noticed how many ladies are wearing them these days??
It's become quite a fashion statement and it's all thanks to the efforts of Sharon Curtis who came up with the idea as a little extra fund raiser for our club.  To date over 100 of them have been sold with a few still on hand  So, if you haven't gotten yours yet and you see Sharon coming, better get out your wallet - they are going fast at $10 a piece.

July, 2008-

Having fun 'doing good'!

Thanks to the efforts of ACRWL member Karen Roberts, we are now  official staffers at  "Fridays After 5" with all our earnings and tips being donated to "From Us to You"- a local charitable organization doing a wonderful job of sending care packages to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Cindi Burket and Susie Klekamp joined Karen and a friend  at the soft drink stand the night of the Willie Nelson concert and had a great time meeting and serving folks  - many of whom spoke positively to them despite knowing they were Republicans! And they earned over $200 dollars to be donated to this charity in our name.

If you'd like to join in the fun and go with the ACRWL group when they do this again, please contact Karen Roberts at 962-3320 or email mikeycorleone@Comcast.net

Mark your calendars

Virginia's Attorney General, Bob McDonnell, has accepted our invitation to be the guest speaker at our first fall luncheon which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25th at the Glenmore County Club, starting at 11:30.

We are indeed fortunate to have him as our guest since he is not only our current attorney general but also an announced candidate for governor in next year's gubernatorial elections.  Please plan to attend.

Recent actions by local governing boards have raised such concerns about the rights of property owners that a new organization has been formed to protect these constitutional granted rights of ownership.

Late Breaking "Bad" News!

The day after our March luncheon invites were mailed, we received a telephone call from Agnes Cross White, who was to speak at our luncheon on Thursday March 20th, telling us that she had fallen and broken her leg in two places. Obviously, since she lives in Florida and was flying here to attend both the Festival of the Book and our meeting, she is now no longer able to do either.  We are sincerely distressed for her - and extremely disappointed for all of us -

But the "Good News" is -

Ken Boyd, Chairman of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors, has agreed to replace her! The timing for having him as our speaker could not be more appropriate since the Board is currently in the process of arriving at a budget and is very much in the news these days.

The Daily Progress has been featuring a series of articles detailing all the different issues at stake in determining this year's budget. Many locals organizations and citizens have 'weighed in' creating a healthy and lively debate. Since the final public hearing on the budget will not be until April 2 and the actual vote on the budget not until April 9th, having someone speak to us about this on March 20th could not be more timely - and who better to inform us of the various considerations and their possible affect on us than the Chairman of the Board making the decision!

Many spouses and friends who would not normally be interested in coming to our meetings may find this speaker/topic of utmost interest  - so be sure to let them know that we welcome guests - but don't forget the deadline for making reservations is Wednesday, March 12th!

To make a reservation, send check payable to ACRWL for $25/per   to Pat Earle, 1212 Townbrook Crossing, Charlottesville, VA 22901

February 2008

Congratulations are in order!

For two of our ACRWL ladies - Jane Weir and Sally Zellem.  At their annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, the Albemarle County Republican Committee presented Jane with their "Volunteer of the Year" award and Sally was named the "Rookie Volunteer of the Year".  It is indeed a credit to our league that these two awards were won by members of ACRWL.

Many thanks again to all ACRWL members who gave of their time and talents to help our local candidates.  Your participation in these campaigns was quite meaningful and deeply appreciated.

Are you a Romney supporter?

If so, this is an URGENT appeal for your help! Please contact Tanya Skeen, as soon as possible, at 971-4015 or Tanyaskeen@yahoo.com to find out what you can do this coming weekend. (Feb 8th to 11th ) to help him win the Virginia Republican Presidential Primary on Tuesday, February 12th (see below)

Presidential Primary in Virginia

There is a LOT going on in the political world this year - starting with the Virginia Presidential Primary Elections on Tuesday, Feb 12th.      No one can say for certain at this time who will be our Republican nominee so despite all the media 'hype' (or because of it) your vote in this primary is vitally important - not just to our party but to the future of our country as well.   If you are not able to go to the polls on Tuesday, you can still vote "absentee" by going to the Registrar's office on 5th Street Extended prior to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.  9th, 2008.  Call Pat Earle (977-6763) if you need more info.

Be Delegate Bell's guest at the Capital!

Delegate Rob Bell has invited ACRWL members to visit him at the State Capital on Tuesday, February 26th!   Here's your opportunity to tour of our State Capital and spend a memorable day with fellow League members.  If interested, call right away - Caroline Taylor 978-3816 or Carolinegop@aol.com.

December 2007

ACRWL members visit the White House

On Tuesday, December 4th, forty-seven ACRWL members and guests traveled by bus to Washington to view the Christmas decorations at the White House.  Afterwards, the group had lunch and visited the American Indian museum, the newest of the Smithsonian museums, and were also able to enjoy the nearby Botanical Gardens in their holiday array.  The weather (and the traffic) were as good as anyone could expect this time of year - and the group returned home on schedule at 5:30.  Our sincere thanks to our 5th District Congressman, Virgil Goode, for making it possible for us to have this memorable trip which we hope to do again in 2008.  If you didn't get to go this time, be sure to sign up early for next year's trip!

ACRWL's annual fund raiser a big success

By the 2nd week in December, we had delivered and received payment from approx. 50 "customers" who had ordered one or more of the 150 White House Christmas Ornaments we purchased, thus successfully completing our fundraising efforts for this year. Indeed, there were quite a few last minute requests for additional ornaments which unfortunately we were unable to fill.  To all who participated - we hope you enjoyed your ornaments and we thank you for seeing to it that our Candidate Fund (which was depleted this fall) now stands at a healthy $900!!!

November 2007

Final luncheon meeting of 2007

The Blue Ridge Cafe in Ruckersville was the site for our 6th and final luncheon meeting of the year.  Several members brought guests and we were delighted to have join us Jane Danilek, Pam Snow, Ruth Sullivan, Christine Barnicle, Mirtha Cobb, Jeanne Payne, Sally Cochran's daughter, Debbie Barr and Judy Vermillion's daughter, Emily Clancy as well as new 2008 members Adele Cotton and Ann Wenger.

And there was a surprise guest, as well -  Ann Thornber's therapy dog, "Joy"  - much to the delight of all!

Our guest speaker was Miss Dana White, 1994 graduate of Charlottesville High School, currently serving on the Foreign Affairs staff of Senator John McCain.  Since her graduation only 9 years ago from the University of Chicago with a degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Dana has traveled overseas extensively and has had remarkable experiences.  Her talk was both informative and extremely enjoyable

October, 2007

Local connection to a Presidential Campaign

Some of you may be acquainted as I am with Tanya Skeen who lives in the Franklin subdivision off Route 20 North.  But did you know that she is the sister of Dr. Dane McBride who has been interviewed recently by several major media outlets because he is closely connected with the campaign of the Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney!

Dr McBride will be in Charlottesville Thursday, October 25th at 7:30 p.m. at the Albemarle County Office Building, Room 235 and you are invited to come hear about his personal experiences with Governor Romney when they served together as missionaries in France and later, in other projects, as well.

After local appearances of Hillary and Barack, what a treat to have this opportunity to hear personally about one of our candidates!!

 Welcome, New Members!

Carol Jackson, Ann Thornber and Lydia Kessler have joined ACRWL since our March meeting.  Carol lives in University Village on the west side of town. Ann has a home in Forest Lakes South off 29 North and Lydia lives on Stone Creek Point off Rt. 20 South. So from north, west and south, we are delighted to welcome all three of you and look forward to seeing you at all of our upcoming meetings!

March 2007

You won't want to miss our March Luncheon!

Delegate Rob Bell is scheduled to be our speaker and we are also expecting Jean Ann Bolling, wife of our Attorney General Bob Bolling.

In addition, we are hopeful of having in attendance and being able to hear from Karin Agness, a first year law student at UVA who is the founder and president of Network of Enlightened Women. This is an outstanding organization of conservative women that is 'springing up' at colleges all over the country. If you'd like to know more about it, go to www.enlightenedwomen.org

Space may be limited, so make your reservation now for March 22 at the Glenmore Country Club.  For complete details, see calendar.

A PLEA FOR DUES

If you haven't already done so, please try to send in your 2007 annual dues as soon as possible.  The reason is this: Our representation at the state VFRW convention in April will be based on the number of dues paying members we have reported to the state as of March 15th.

Last year our membership reached a high of 85 members making us one of the largest clubs in Virginia.  We anticipate increasing that number this year but unless membership dues are paid before March 15th, we will not be recognized as such at the convention.

To renew your membership - or to become a new member - please send a check payable to ACRWL for $20 to Martha Harris, 4615 Pelham Rd, Earlysville, VA 22936.

 Welcome, New Members!

It is certainly a pleasure to welcome the following new members who have joined ACRWL since the coffee in February: Norma Holland, Majorie Ratcliff, and Peggy Shifflett.

Also a hearty "welcome back" to Ginny Adams, Marge Amidon, and Donna Fiery who re-joined ACRWL this year.

February 2007

GETTING 2007 OFF TO A GREAT START!

Never let it be said that we GOP ladies are timid souls!  Certainly not the 30 or so that came to the Membership Coffee at Emily Smith's home on February 15th despite the chilly temperature and the icy roads! A good time was had by all - thanks to the hospitality of our hostess and the delicious refreshments provided by members under the able direction of Chef d'jour, Margaret Mary Selinger.

Sharon Jones, VFRW 5th District Representative, duly installed our 2007 officers: President- Pat Earle;  Vice Pres for Membership - Cindi Burket; Vice Pres for Programs - "M.M." Selinger;  Secretary - Bev Turner; Corresponding Secretary - Caroline Taylor; Treasurer - Martha Harris.

The President then recognized the chairmen of our seven standing committees:  By-laws - Caroline Taylor; Campaign Activities - Sharon Curtis;  Community Activities - Betty Hastoglis; Fundraising - Julie Voigt;  History - Cynthia Collier and Donna Tomlin; Legislative - Jean Edmunds;  Publicity - Cindi Burket.

A report by Legislative Chair, Jean Edmunds, was followed by a lively discussion about the rising real estate taxes in this area and how we can as individuals can do our part to persuade our Supervisors to lower the tax rate in the face of the tremendous increase in assessment values.

The President also recognized and welcomed the following new members
Rae Barnes and Marsha Ripplinger and guests, Victoria Fenwick and Andrea Saathoff,  A sincere "Thank you", Ladies, for joining us. We look forward to seeing you again at future gatherings.

Memorial Service for Lynn Curtis

The memorial service for Sharon Curtis' husband, Lynn, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 19th at the Beaver Dam Baptist Church on Route 250 East, (the Richmond Road) approx. 5 miles passed Glenmore.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the Organ Fund of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 1794 Richmond Road, Troy, Va 22974.

State GOP Chairman speaks at Miller Center

When Ed Gillespie, new Chairman for the Republican Party of Virginia, spoke at the Miller Center on January 31st, he was graciously received by a few local Democrats and a goodly number of active Republicans including the following ACRWL members and their husbands:  Rae Barnes, Mary and Bob Burnett, Sally Cochran, Jean and Dave Edmunds,  Lore and Bill Millick, Emily and Charlie Smith, Inga and Mac VanHorn, Amber VerValin, Julie and Bill Voigt, Jane Weir, Marilyn Roper, Pat Earle and George Curme.

Chairman Gillespie is a warm and engaging speaker whose political knowledge is as impressive as his obvious dedication to the well being of the Republican Party.  As Virginians we are indeed fortunate to have him as our new state chairman. Given the high demand for his time, having him be a speaker at one of our meetings is a 'long shot' - but we are going to try to arrange it! Stay tuned - with fingers crossed!

Members enjoy Legislative Day

Jean Edmunds, Chair of our Legislative Committee, attended the Virginia Federation of Republican Women's Legislative Day in Richmond on January 11 accompanied by Sally Cochran and Pat Earle.  In addition to hearing from a slate of informative and interesting speakers, they had an opportunity to meet Republican delegates and senators from around the state and were joined at lunch by Delegate Rob Bell and State Senator Mark Obenshain (from the Harrisonburg area).  All were impressed with the scope of the event and thoroughly enjoyed the program as well as getting to know many of fellow VFRW members from across the state of Virginia.

Legislative Day is an annual affair held held each January in the opening week of the General Assembly. All ACRWL members are encouraged to attend.  Check with Jean about YOUR going to the event next year.

ACRWL member working at the Capital

Serving as our Corresponding Secretary isn't the only thing keeping hard working Caroline Taylor busy these days. Once a week (at least) she drives to Richmond to help out in Delegate Rob Bell's office.  Good for you, Caroline!  We look forward to having you explain to us exactly what does go on in Richmond when the General Assembly is in session!!

 October 2006

Allen, on Thursday, October 26th from 2 to 4 at the home of Jean Edmunds in Glenmore.  This event is open to all interested women so ACRWL members, please pass the word and also, be sure to come and bring a friend or two!!!  See you there!

  ACRWL 'answering the call'

When the call went out from the Chairman of the Albemarle Republican Committee for help in staffing GOP Headquarters, ACRWL members stepped up to the plate and volunteered to staff every Friday until Election Day from 10:00 until 3:00. The Headquarters is located in Albemarle Square just to the north of the Outback Restaurant so if you're in the area any Friday, stop by and visit with your fellow club members.

How would you like to help?

(A message from The Charlottesville & Albemarle County Republican Committees)

We are only one month away from a most important election and volunteers are urgently needed for several activities:

To raise money for our Candidate's Fund, ACRWL is now selling White House Christmas Ornaments.  These are beautiful ornaments, produced by the White House Historical Association and they come nicely boxed with a pamphlet detailing the historical significance of this particular ornament. They make lovely Christmas gifts! We are offering them at the reasonable price of $20 and IF we can sell a minimum of 200, we can make a decent profit, all of which will go into our Candidates' Fund.  So, we are asking each member to consider purchasing at least two (2) ornaments . Can we count on you?  If so, call Julie Voigt (973-3508) or Pat Earle (977-6763)

And a New Challenge for ACRWL

We've been asked if we, as an organization, can provide a much needed service to both the Allen and the Goode campaigns by being responsible for two (2) 'Letters to the Editor' every week from now until Election Day. Several members have already stepped forth and as of Sept. 20th, we have had 7 letters published. If you would like to help us meet this new challenge, (it's not as hard as you may think!) please call Pat Earle at 977-6763 or email PatEarle@SeaDevil.net

Members Comment on Web Site

The feedback on our 'Personal Profile' feature has been most favorable. Members tell us they enjoy knowing more about others in our League and they look forward to having a different ACRWL member in the spotlight each month. Curious about how the police work?

If so, just ask Sharon Curtis or Cyndi Burket to tell you all about it.  Both of these fellow ACRWL members have just completed the eight week course given by the Albemarle County Citizens' Police Academy. Both said they enjoyed it tremendously and learned a lot of 'neat stuff'.   Congratulations, gals, on quite an interesting accomplishment.

Congressman Goode at Senior Center

Congressmen Virgil Goode and his opponent, Al Weed, appeared at the Charlottesville Senior Center on Wednesday, August 9th in what was the first of several debates scheduled to take place between now and Election Day. The event, sponsored by the Senior Statesmen of Virginia, was very well attended with the crowd being fairly evenly divided (if not slightly in our favor!) and included quite a large number of ACRWL members.  Many thanks to all who made a point of being there to support of our 5th Congressional District Republican Candidate.

July 2006

Our prayers are needed

Several of our fellow members have loved ones facing difficult medical challenges.  Sally Cochran's daughter, Betty Spann's son and Sharon Curtis' husband, Lyn, are currently receiving treatment for cancer. All would greatly appreciate our prayers and notes of encouragement.

"Stuffing Party"  - a great success

It was 'standing room only' for some workers when Congressman's Goode's "stuffing Party" took place at GOP Headquarters on July 12th and 13th.  A  total of 15 volunteers, including many ACRWL members, gathered to hand address, stuff and stamp a very large campaign mail-out which should have taken several days but instead was completed in only two!  Kudos to Caroline Taylor who organized the 'party' and many thanks to all who participated and reported that a good time was had by all!!!.
