April 2008
Check THIS out!
Recent actions by local governing boards have
raised such concerns about the rights of property owners that a new organization
has been formed to protect these constitutional granted rights of ownership.
March 2008
Are you "in the know"
About what is going on in our county these days?
Those who attended our March luncheon are certainly better informed now as a
result of what we heard from our guest speaker, Ken Boyd, Chairman of our
Board of Supervisors.
Ken's thoughtful and informative presentation
covered the past, present and the future we can anticipate based upon the
direction our governing board appears to be taking. And he stressed the
importance of attending public hearings and voicing your approval or disapproval
of the many far reaching proposals under consideration by our governing board.
In particular, he suggested we try to attend the
public hearing on Wednesday, April 2nd starting at 6:00 in the Lane
Auditorium of the Albemarle County Office Building on McIntire Road since
this will be the last opportunity for the public to express their views
before the board votes on April 9th to establish this year's tax rate.
All ACRWL members are encouraged to make every
effort to attend this important meeting.
Late Breaking "Bad" News!
The day after our March luncheon invites were
mailed, we received a telephone call from Agnes Cross White, who was to
speak at our luncheon on Thursday March 20th, telling us that she had
fallen and broken her leg in two places. Obviously, since she lives in Florida
and was flying here to attend both the Festival of the Book and our meeting, she
is now no longer able to do either. We are sincerely distressed for her -
and extremely disappointed for all of us -
But
the "Good News" is -
Ken Boyd, Chairman of the Albemarle
Board of Supervisors, has agreed to replace her! The timing for having him
as our speaker could not be more appropriate since the Board is currently in the
process of arriving at a budget and is very much in the news
these days.
The Daily Progress has been
featuring a series of articles detailing all the different issues at stake in
determining this year's budget. Many locals organizations and citizens have
'weighed in' creating a healthy and lively debate. Since the final public
hearing on the budget will not be until April 2 and the actual vote on the
budget not until April 9th, having someone speak to us about this on March
20th could not be more timely - and who better to inform us of the various
considerations and their possible affect on us than the Chairman of the Board
making the decision!
Many spouses and friends who would not normally
be interested in coming to our meetings may find this speaker/topic of utmost
interest - so be sure to let them know that we welcome guests - but
don't forget the deadline for making reservations is Wednesday, March 12th!
To make a reservation, send check payable to
ACRWL for $25/per to Pat Earle, 1212 Townbrook Crossing,
Charlottesville, VA 22901
February 2008
Congratulations are in order!
For two of our ACRWL ladies - Jane Weir
and Sally Zellem. At their annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner,
the Albemarle County Republican Committee presented Jane with their "Volunteer
of the Year" award and Sally was named the "Rookie Volunteer of the Year".
It is indeed a credit to our league that these two awards were won by members of
ACRWL.
Many thanks again to all ACRWL members who
gave of their time and talents to help our local candidates. Your
participation in these campaigns was quite meaningful and deeply appreciated.
Are you a Romney supporter?
If so, this is an URGENT appeal for your help!
Please contact Tanya Skeen, as soon as possible, at 971-4015 or
Tanyaskeen@yahoo.com to find out what
you can do this coming weekend. (Feb 8th to 11th ) to help him win the Virginia
Republican Presidential Primary on Tuesday, February 12th (see below)
Presidential Primary in Virginia
There is a LOT going on in the political world
this year - starting with the Virginia Presidential Primary Elections on
Tuesday, Feb 12th. No one can say for certain
at this time who will be our Republican nominee so despite all the media 'hype'
(or because of it) your vote in this primary is vitally important - not just to
our party but to the future of our country as well. If you are not
able to go to the polls on Tuesday, you can still vote "absentee" by going to
the Registrar's office on 5th Street Extended prior to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 9th, 2008. Call Pat Earle (977-6763) if you need more info.
Be Delegate Bell's guest at the Capital!

December 2007
ACRWL
members visit the White House
On Tuesday, December 4th, forty-seven ACRWL
members and guests traveled by bus to Washington to view the Christmas
decorations at the White House. Afterwards, the group had lunch and
visited the American Indian museum, the newest of the Smithsonian museums, and
were also able to enjoy the nearby Botanical Gardens in their holiday array.
The weather (and the traffic) were as good as anyone could expect this time of
year - and the group returned home on schedule at 5:30. Our sincere thanks
to our 5th District Congressman, Virgil Goode, for making it possible for us to
have this memorable trip which we hope to do again in 2008. If you didn't
get to go this time, be sure to sign up early for next year's trip!
ACRWL's annual fund raiser a big success
By the 2nd week in December, we had delivered and
received payment from approx. 50 "customers" who had ordered one or more of the
150 White House Christmas Ornaments we purchased, thus successfully completing
our fundraising efforts for this year. Indeed, there were quite a few last
minute requests for additional ornaments which unfortunately we were unable to
fill. To all who participated - we hope you enjoyed your ornaments and we
thank you for seeing to it that our Candidate Fund (which was depleted this
fall) now stands at a healthy $900!!!
November 2007
Final
luncheon meeting of 2007
The Blue Ridge Cafe in Ruckersville was the site
for our 6th and final luncheon meeting of the year. Several members
brought guests and we were delighted to have join us Jane Danilek, Pam Snow,
Ruth Sullivan, Christine Barnicle, Mirtha Cobb, Jeanne Payne, Sally Cochran's
daughter, Debbie Barr and Judy Vermillion's daughter, Emily Clancy as well as
new 2008 members Adele Cotton and Ann Wenger.
And there was a surprise guest, as well -
Ann Thornber's therapy dog, "Joy" - much to the delight of all!
Our guest speaker was Miss Dana White, 1994
graduate of Charlottesville High School, currently serving on the Foreign
Affairs staff of Senator John McCain. Since her graduation only 9 years
ago from the University of Chicago with a degree in East Asian Languages and
Civilizations, Dana has traveled overseas extensively and has had remarkable
experiences. Her talk was both informative and extremely enjoyable

Local connection to a Presidential
Campaign
Some of you may be acquainted as I am with
Tanya Skeen who lives in the Franklin subdivision off Route 20 North.
But did you know that she is the sister of Dr. Dane McBride who has been
interviewed recently by several major media outlets because he is closely
connected with the campaign of the Republican presidential candidate, Mitt
Romney!
Dr McBride will be in Charlottesville
Thursday, October 25th at 7:30 p.m. at the Albemarle County Office Building,
Room 235 and you are invited to come hear about his personal experiences with
Governor Romney when they served together as missionaries in France and later,
in other projects, as well.
After local appearances of Hillary and Barack,
what a treat to have this opportunity to hear personally about one of our
candidates!!
Time to Make Your Reservation!
For our October luncheon
meeting which will be at the Greencroft Club on Wednesday, October 24th with
guest speaker, Delegate Chris Saxman.
Deadline for reservations is Wednesday,

1212 Townbrook Crossing, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. See you there!
ACRWL Member Hospitalized in Utah
While on a tour of national parks, Isabelle Kaye
fell and broke her hip. We've heard she is coming along very nicely but
will have to stay in the rehabilitation center there for another couple of
weeks. How difficult it must be to be hospitalized for such a long time so
far away from home and friends! If you'd like to help brighten up her long
days a bit, please send her a card at the following address:
Isabelle Kaye, Coral Desert Rehabilitation,
1490 East Foremaster Drive, Building B. , St. George, UT 84790

ATTENTION MEMBERS !!!
Change in Dates for both Sept & Oct mtgs!
An unavoidable conflict in luncheons dates for
our guest speaker resulted in our changing our luncheon date with State Chair
John Hager to Wednesday, September 26th (one week later) Same
time, same place same price, etc. Notices being mailed this week.
Also, we moved our October Luncheon to Wednesday,
October 24th so the two luncheons would not be so close together. See: "calendar"
"Volunteer of the Month" Award
A massive campaign mailing consisting of 6,500
hand addressed envelopes went out from GOP Headquarters this month
thanks, in large measure, to the dedicated efforts of small group of ACRWL
ladies who worked tirelessly to help get them all hand addressed!. For
this, ACRWL's first "Volunteer of the Month" award goes to the following:
Rosemarie Battig, Bessie Birckhead, Rosemarie Calzidilla, Sally Cochran, Cynthia
Collier, Pat Earle, Caroline Taylor, Donna Tomlin, and Sue Wurzer.
Congratulations,
ladies, and many thanks to each of you for your much appreciated labors on
behalf of one of our local candidates.
1st Fall Meeting September 19th
The first of our three fall luncheon meetings
will be held on Wednesday, September 19th at the Glenmore Country
Club. We are extremely pleased that our guest speaker at this luncheon
will be our newly elected State Chairman, former Lt. Governor John
Hager Please plan to attend and we encourage you to bring your husband
and/or other guests. See "Calendar" for full details.
June 2007
PLEASE NOTE!
Time Change for ACRWL picnic July 1st
The starting time for our picnic on Sunday July 1st
has been changed to 5:00 to accommodate those who wish to attend the Free
Union 4th of July parade scheduled for 4:00. Some of our special guests will be
participating in the parade and this will allow them to join us afterwards.
5 New Members in May!
It isn't often we have the pleasure of welcoming
so many new members at one time so we are thrilled to do so to the five who
joined ACRWL at our May meeting: Rose Marie Battig who lives in the
Free Union area, Isabelle Kaye whose home is near the Senior Center,
Judy Vermillion, a long time county resident who resides at Franklin
on Route 20 North near the Key West subdivision and Emalie Hedberg
and Pat Wright who are neighbors in the new Stone Creek complex off Rt.
20 South. A most warm welcome to each of you! We sincerely look forward to
seeing all of you again at our upcoming events.
GOP
Candidates Speak at ACRWL meeting
The promenade ballroom at the Doubletree Hotel became the
launching pad for five local campaigns as the newly nominated Republican
candidates participated in a panel presentation before more than 50 members and
guests at our May luncheon meeting. Two of the candidates Chip Harding
for Sheriff and John Dawson for Clerk of the Court are running for an
elected office for the first time. The other three, Supervisors Ken Boyd and
David Wyant, and Commonwealth Attorney Jim Camblos are seeking
re-election. All five impressed the audience with their superior
qualifications and their obvious ability to answer the numerous questions covering a
variety of subjects.
As a result of our fund raising efforts last year
that allowed us to establish a Candidates Fund, all five of these candidates
received a campaign contribution from our league.
Get Ready to Celebrate the 4th!
Be sure you mark your calendars and plan to attend
ACRWL's annual "Celebrating the 4th" picnic which will be held this year on
Sunday, July 1st at Darden Towe Park off Route 20 North The fun will begin
at 4:00 and last as long as folks want to stay. Blue Ridge Cafe and Catering
Company is providing the food and promises there will be something for everyone
to enjoy. This is a Family Affair - so bring the spouses, kids, grandkids,
whatever! See "Calendar" for more details.
May 2007
An Inside
View of Virginia Politics
It's an annual event you won't want to miss! Delegate
Rob Bell's Insiders' Breakfast is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
Saturday, June 2nd at the Wood Grill Buffet on 29N (next to Toy's-R-Us) with
special guests, Speaker of the House of Delegate, Bill Howell and our
5th District Congressmen, Virgil Goode. The $25 charge includes 'all you can
eat' breakfast and a chance to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.
Make check payable to Friends of Rob Bell for Delegate and send to him at 2309
Finch Court, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
It's
time to "Know our Candidates"!
On May 17th, the Albemarle County
Republican Committee (ACRC) will hold a Mass Meeting to officially nominate
those GOP candidates for local offices who will be on the ballot this November.
The offices to be elected at that time will include Supervisors, Commonwealth
Attorney, County Sheriff, and County Clerk of the Court. All positions will be
hotly contested in the general election by opposing political parties or
independents. It is vital to the well being of our community that we
support those whom we nominate. So please plan to come to our May Meeting
and get to know our candidates. (See "Calendar" for full details)
And, sadly, time to say "good-bye"
to Julie Voigt who will be
moving to Annapolis, Md the middle of this month. We are happy for Julie
and Bill that they are going to be near three of their four children and
grandchildren, but sad for ourselves to be loosing such a vital member of our
League. Julie did a fantastic job last year as our Fund Raising Chairman,
overseeing the sale of White House Christmas ornaments which resulted in the
creation of our well endowed "Candidates' Fund". Thank you, Julie, for all
you have done for our League. We will miss your friendly smile and your
'can-do' attitude. Our sincere best wishes to you and
your family.
Help Wanted!
With the unexpected departure of
Julie Voigt, we are very much in need of a new Fund Raising Chairman.
The only fund raiser we have planned for this year is the same sale of White
House Christmas Ornaments that we did last year. Thanks to the work Julie
has done and the popularity of the ornaments themselves, overseeing the project
should be much easier this time around. SO, how 'bout it? If you're
willing to spend a few hours this fall helping ACRWL raise money for future
candidates, please contact Pat Earle!! (977-6763
or PatEarle@SeaDevil.net)
And if fund raising is not your
cup of tea, how about just "FUN raising"? We also need
volunteers for our 'Celebrating the Fourth' event on Sunday, July 1st. If
you like to plan and arrange menus, or do patriotic
decorating, or dream up fun events (like the 'surprise
raffle' last year) or help welcome folks, ACRWL would
sure welcome you!!!
Many thanks, again, to Suzanne
Burch and Meg Riechman who did a great job of handling last year's
4th of July event. In ACRWL, however, we believe in sharing the work and
the fun. Hope you agree!
Please don't forget about your dues!
If you haven't already sent them in, please try
to do so this month. Make your check for $20 payable to ACRWL and send to Martha Harris, 4615
Pelham Road, Earlysville, VA 22936 . If you can't remember whether
you've paid or not (and a lot of us have this problem) give Martha a call
at 973-6835 or email her at
gran1039@aol.com And many thanks. Your
membership is important to the well being of our organization.
April 2007
Some more news about our
April Luncheon
In addition to our principal speaker, Neil
Williamson, Executive Director of the Free Enterprise Forum, we are also
going to have the opportunity to meet and hear briefly from Scott Sayre
who is seeking the Republican nomination to run for State Senate from the 24th
District. Scott spoke recently at the monthly GOP breakfast. Those who
heard him were quite impressed and are sure others will enjoy meeting him and
his wife, Mary.
So check the "Calendar" for more details on the
April 19th luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn and be sure to send in
your reservation checks prior to the deadline of April 11th.
Karin Agness to speak at
the Miller Center
First year law student, Karin Agness,
founder and president of the Network of Enlightened Women (NeW)
who spoke to us at our March meeting will be the speaker at the prestigious
Miller Center on Wednesday, April 11th. There can be no better
indication of the success and impact of Karin's organization. Please try to show
her your support by attending the session which starts at 11:00.
Also, if you wish to help her fund a national
convention this summer. please send your tax deductible contribution by
check payable to NeW to Karin Agness, 110 Ivy Drive, Apt 11,
Charlottesville, VA 22903.
Welcome, New Members!
Carol Jackson, Ann Thornber and
Lydia Kessler have joined ACRWL since our March meeting. Carol lives
in University Village on the west side of town. Ann has a home in Forest
Lakes South off 29 North and Lydia lives on Stone Creek Point off Rt. 20 South.
So from north, west and south, we are delighted to welcome all three of you and look forward to seeing you at
all of our upcoming meetings!
March 2007
You won't want to miss our
March Luncheon!
Delegate Rob Bell is scheduled to be
our speaker and we are also expecting Jean Ann Bolling, wife of our
Attorney General Bob Bolling.
In addition, we are hopeful of having in
attendance and being able to hear from Karin Agness, a first year law
student at UVA who is the founder and president of Network of
Enlightened Women. This is an outstanding organization of conservative women
that is 'springing up' at colleges all over the country. If you'd like to know
more about it, go to
www.enlightenedwomen.org
Space may be limited, so make your reservation
now for March 22 at the Glenmore Country Club. For complete
details, see calendar.
A PLEA FOR DUES
If you haven't already done so, please try to
send in your 2007 annual dues as soon as possible. The reason is this:
Our representation at the state VFRW convention in April will be based on the
number of dues paying members we have reported to the state as of March 15th.
Last year our membership reached a high of 85
members making us one of the largest clubs in Virginia. We anticipate
increasing that number this year but unless membership dues are paid before
March 15th, we will not be recognized as such at the convention.
To renew your membership - or to become a new
member - please send a check payable to ACRWL for $20 to Martha Harris, 4615
Pelham Rd, Earlysville, VA 22936.
Welcome, New Members!
It is certainly a pleasure to welcome the
following new members who have joined ACRWL since the coffee in February:
Norma Holland, Majorie Ratcliff, and Peggy Shifflett.
Also a hearty "welcome back" to Ginny
Adams, Marge Amidon, and Donna Fiery who re-joined ACRWL this year.
February 2007
GETTING
2007 OFF TO A GREAT START!
Never let it be said that we GOP
ladies are timid souls! Certainly not the 30 or so that came to the
Membership Coffee at Emily Smith's home on February 15th despite the
chilly temperature and the icy roads! A good time was had by all - thanks to the
hospitality of our hostess and the delicious refreshments provided by members
under the able direction of Chef d'jour, Margaret Mary Selinger.
Sharon Jones,
VFRW 5th District Representative, duly installed our 2007 officers: President-
Pat Earle; Vice Pres for Membership - Cindi Burket; Vice Pres
for Programs - "M.M." Selinger; Secretary - Bev Turner;
Corresponding Secretary - Caroline Taylor; Treasurer - Martha Harris.
The President then recognized the
chairmen of our seven standing committees: By-laws - Caroline Taylor;
Campaign Activities - Sharon Curtis; Community Activities -
Betty Hastoglis; Fundraising - Julie Voigt; History -
Cynthia Collier and Donna Tomlin; Legislative - Jean Edmunds;
Publicity - Cindi Burket.
A report by Legislative Chair,
Jean Edmunds, was followed by a lively discussion about the rising real
estate taxes in this area and how we can as individuals can do our part to
persuade our Supervisors to lower the tax rate in the face of the tremendous
increase in assessment values.
The President also recognized and
welcomed the following new members
Rae Barnes and Marsha Ripplinger and guests, Victoria Fenwick and Andrea Saathoff,
A sincere "Thank you", Ladies, for joining us. We look
forward to seeing you again at future gatherings.
January 2007
START THE NEW YEAR
OFF RIGHT!
Join your fellow ACRWL members for our Annual Membership Coffee
to be held at the home of Emily Smith, 103 Falcon Drive, in Colthurst on
Thursday, February 15th at 10:00 a.m.
And let's welcome our New
Treasurer
by renewing our membership and sending her our
$20/year dues!
Make your checks payable to ACRWL and send them to our newly elected treasurer,
Martha Harris, at 4615 Pelham Rd, Earlysville, VA 22936.
Memorial Service for Lynn
Curtis
The memorial service for Sharon
Curtis' husband, Lynn, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 19th at
the Beaver Dam Baptist Church on Route 250 East, (the Richmond Road) approx. 5
miles passed Glenmore. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the
Organ Fund of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 1794 Richmond Road, Troy, Va 22974.
State GOP Chairman
speaks at Miller Center
When Ed Gillespie, new Chairman for the
Republican Party of Virginia, spoke at the Miller Center on January 31st, he was
graciously received by a few local Democrats and a goodly number of active
Republicans including the following ACRWL members and their husbands:
Rae Barnes, Mary and Bob Burnett, Sally Cochran, Jean and Dave Edmunds,
Lore and Bill Millick, Emily and Charlie Smith, Inga and Mac VanHorn, Amber
VerValin, Julie and Bill Voigt, Jane Weir, Marilyn Roper, Pat Earle and George
Curme.
Chairman Gillespie is a warm and
engaging speaker whose political knowledge is as impressive as his obvious
dedication to the well being of the Republican Party. As Virginians we are
indeed fortunate to have him as our new state chairman. Given the high demand
for his time, having him be a speaker at one of our meetings is a 'long shot' -
but we are going to try to arrange it! Stay tuned - with fingers crossed!
Members enjoy
Legislative Day
Jean Edmunds, Chair of our
Legislative Committee, attended the Virginia Federation of Republican Women's
Legislative Day in Richmond on January 11 accompanied by Sally Cochran
and Pat Earle. In addition to hearing from a slate of informative
and interesting speakers, they had an opportunity to meet Republican delegates
and senators from around the state and were joined at lunch by Delegate Rob Bell
and State Senator Mark Obenshain (from the Harrisonburg area). All were
impressed with the scope of the event and thoroughly enjoyed the program as well
as getting to know many of fellow VFRW members from across the state of
Virginia.
Legislative Day is an annual affair held held
each January in the opening week of the General Assembly. All ACRWL members are
encouraged to attend. Check with Jean about YOUR going to the event next
year.
ACRWL member working at the Capital
Serving as our Corresponding
Secretary isn't the only thing keeping hard working Caroline Taylor busy
these days. Once a week (at least) she drives to Richmond to help out in
Delegate Rob Bell's office. Good for you, Caroline! We look forward
to having you explain to us exactly what does go on in Richmond when the General
Assembly is in session!!
October 2006
Breaking News!
ACRWL is hosting an 'informal gathering' for
Susan Allen, wife of U.S. Senator George F. Allen, on Thursday, October
26th from 2 to 4 at the home of Jean Edmunds in Glenmore. This event
is open to all interested women so ACRWL members, please pass the word and also,
be sure to come and bring a friend or two!!! See you there!
ACRWL 'answering the call'
When the call went out from the Chairman of the
Albemarle Republican Committee for help in staffing GOP Headquarters, ACRWL
members stepped up to the plate and volunteered to staff every Friday until
Election Day from 10:00 until 3:00. The Headquarters is located in Albemarle
Square just to the north of the Outback Restaurant so if you're in the area any
Friday, stop by and visit with your fellow club members.

To raise money for our Candidate's Fund,
ACRWL is now selling White House Christmas Ornaments. These are
beautiful ornaments, produced by the White House Historical Association and they
come nicely boxed with a pamphlet detailing the historical significance of this
particular ornament. They make lovely Christmas gifts! We are offering
them at the reasonable price of $20 and IF we can sell a minimum of
200, we can make a decent profit, all of which will
go into our Candidates' Fund. So, we are asking each member to
consider purchasing at least two (2) ornaments . Can we count on you?
If so, call Julie Voigt (973-3508) or Pat Earle (977-6763)
September 2006

And a New Challenge for ACRWL
We've been asked if we, as an organization,
can provide a much needed service to both the Allen and the Goode campaigns
by being responsible for two (2) 'Letters to the Editor' every week from now
until Election Day. Several members have already stepped forth and as of
Sept. 20th, we have had 7 letters published. If you
would like to help us meet this new challenge, (it's not as hard as you may
think!) please call Pat Earle at 977-6763 or email PatEarle@SeaDevil.net

The feedback on our 'Personal Profile' feature has been most favorable. Members
tell us they enjoy knowing more about others in our League and they look forward
to having a different ACRWL member in the spotlight each month. Click on the link to your

Curious about how the police work?
If so, just ask Sharon Curtis or
Cyndi Burket to tell you all about it. Both of these fellow ACRWL
members have just completed the eight week course given by the Albemarle
County Citizens' Police Academy. Both said they
enjoyed it tremendously and learned a lot of 'neat stuff'.
Congratulations, gals, on quite an interesting accomplishment.
Congressman Goode at Senior Center
Congressmen Virgil Goode and his opponent, Al
Weed, appeared at the Charlottesville Senior Center on Wednesday, August 9th in
what was the first of several debates scheduled to take place between now and
Election Day. The event, sponsored by the Senior Statesmen of Virginia, was very
well attended with the crowd being fairly evenly divided (if not slightly in our
favor!) and included quite a large number of ACRWL members. Many thanks
to all who made a point of being there to support of our 5th Congressional
District Republican Candidate.

Our prayers are needed
Several of our fellow members have loved ones
facing difficult medical challenges. Sally Cochran's daughter, Betty
Spann's son and Sharon Curtis' husband, Lyn, are currently receiving treatment for cancer. All would greatly appreciate our prayers
and notes of encouragement.
"Stuffing Party" - a great success
It was 'standing room only' for some
workers when Congressman's Goode's "stuffing
Party" took place at GOP Headquarters on July 12th and 13th. A
total of 15 volunteers, including many ACRWL members, gathered to hand address,
stuff and stamp a very large campaign mail-out which should have taken several
days but instead was completed in only two! Kudos to Caroline Taylor who
organized the 'party' and many thanks to all who participated and reported that
a good time was had by all!!!.
